The School Crest of HOLY CROSS CATHOLIC ACADEMY Amarillo, Texas
Holy Cross Catholic Academy is the secondary school of the Diocese of Amarillo. As such, the Crest features in the upper left quadrant a portion of the Coat of Arms of the Diocese of Amarillo. The background is yellow to reflect the name of the See city, Amarillo, which is the Spanish word for yellow. The red gridiron honors Saint Laurence, patron of the diocese, who, tradition tells us, was martyred by being roasted on a grid.
The upper right quadrant of the Crest features the symbol used by the Universal Roman Catholic Church to celebrate the Jubilee Year, 2000, in which Holy Cross Catholic Academy was established and dedicated.
The lower left quadrant of the Crest represents a portion of the cape of our Lady of Guadalupe in the traditional blue and gold star pattern. There are seven stars to represent each of the seven classes at Holy Cross Catholic Academy.
In the lower right quadrant of the Crest is the Paschal Candle as a reminder that Our Lord Jesus Christ is the Alpha and the Omega, the Beginning and the End, of all that we are and all that we do. The Paschal Candle is encircled with the familiar symbol of the atomic and technological age, which are both the present and the future for the students of Holy Cross Catholic Academy.
On the field is placed the symbol of salvation, the Cross on which our Blessed Lord gave His life so that we might have eternal life. The cross is red to honor the Spanish explorers who first settled the area that is now the Amarillo Diocese.
The white letters, HOLY CROSS, impress all who see the Crest that the Cross of Jesus holds a very special place for the school community as the title of dedication for this educational institution. At the top of the Crest is depicted the sword of Michael, the Archangel, who is the secondary patron of Holy Cross Catholic Academy.
